PHONICS
Phonics at AGF Academy
At [AGF Academy], we believe that learning to read is one of the most important skills your child will ever develop. Phonics is at the heart of our early reading program, giving children the tools to decode words and build confidence as readers.
What is phonics?
Phonics is a way of teaching children to read by linking the sounds of spoken English (phonemes) to the letters or groups of letters (graphemes) that represent them. For example, the sound /s/ can be represented by the letter “s” as in sun.
Why we teach phonics
Strong foundation – Children learn the building blocks of reading and spelling.
Confidence – Early success encourages a love of reading.
Clarity – Helps children understand how words work, making reading less confusing.
Our approach
We use a systematic, structured phonics program starting in Reception / Kindergarten.
Lessons are short, engaging, and taught daily.
Children learn to blend sounds to read new words and segment them to spell.
We provide plenty of opportunities to practise through games, songs, and reading activities.
How you can help at home
Listen to your child read every day.
Practise the sounds they are learning at school.
Read aloud to them often — it builds vocabulary and enjoyment.
By combining school teaching with home support, we give our children the best start in their reading journey.
